Narrative and subgenres of a thriller
Narrative
Omniscient is when the audience know everything about the
character
Restricted is where the audience only knows what the character
knows
Linear is where there is a clear beginning middle and end
Non-Linear is where the film plays flashbacks to throw the
audience off track
Enigma code this is when it acts as an intriguing form of
grabbing the audience’s attention. It works by gradually finding things out
building up suspense and drama.
Subgenres
Sci-fi thriller
Involves many hi tech pieces of equipment to appeal to the
audience’s eye.
Crime thriller
Involves a murder or robbery, builds up more suspense. Often
focus on the criminals themselves than their crimes. Emphasis their actions on
psychological effects.
Conspiracy thriller
Consists of a hero trapped in a powerful organization.
Supernatural thriller
Mixed with suspense and drama. The protagonist or antagonist
has supernatural powers
Disaster thriller
Uses natural disasters e.g. earthquakes volcanoes tsunamis.
Follows one person or group who thrive to save mankind.
Political thriller
Relies on a hero to provide the stability of the government.
Psychological thriller
Plays on the audiences mind and uses mind games to reflect the
protagonist’s thoughts.
Religious thriller
Unravel the good and bad points about religion. Plays on the
conspiracies of religion.
Action thriller
This is where the film or program involves a lot of enemies and
fighting.
